01

Public Health at Scale

The commission monitors disease trends across a major city to protect public health. Epidemiologists needed faster access to trend data, geographic analysis, and automated alerting when surveillance metrics crossed configured thresholds.

02

Building the Tools

I built multiple R Shiny applications that pulled data from SQL Server and the Electronic Disease Surveillance System (EDSS). The tools refreshed with new case data, generated interactive epidemiological charts and geographic heat maps, and sent text and email notifications when configured thresholds were crossed. Epidemiologists could generate reports on demand for a selected date range or geography.

03

Real-World Impact

These tools reduced repeated manual extraction and made emerging patterns easier for epidemiologists to review. Automated notifications surfaced configured threshold events, while the geographic views supported follow-up by neighborhood.
